Trend Micro Mobile Security Tops Threat Detection Ranks

PC Security Labs confirms AV-Comparatives mobile security effectiveness tests

Marlow, UK – 25th September 2012 Trend Micro, a worldwide leader in cloud and server security, is proud to be recognised as a global leader in mobile security. Trend Micro was awarded highest honors in recent real world testing by two independent security testing organisations.

In the most recent test results, PC Security Labs, based in Jiaxing China, tested fifteen of the most popular Android security solutions. Trend Micro received the highest 5-star rating for high detection rates and minimal false positive scores. The results confirm those released last month by AV-Comparatives in a similar test where again Trend Micro was ranked in the top group with a detection rate of 98-100%.

“This really is a testament to the advanced threat research of our TrendLabs systems and engineers,” said Carol Carpenter, executive vice president and general manager of Trend Micro’s consumer division. “Our advanced Mobile App Reputation technology is constantly collecting and analysing new apps. We found double the number of malicious apps that we were expecting by the end of June, and indications for the third quarter are that this number will continue to grow exponentially.”

The test results come hot on the heels of the latest version of Trend Micro’s flagship mobile app, Trend Micro™ Mobile Security Personal Edition. It now includes the ability to analyse apps for private data theft. “Mobile devices contain some of our most personal information, it is critical that users are aware of the information that the apps they are downloading not only have access to but the information they are collecting,” added Carol. “We have made it our mission to secure and enhance the mobile lives of consumers and make mobile protection worry-free and easy. Protection against virus and malware is part of this, as is the protection of private and confidential information.”

Commenting on the current mobile malware landscape for consumers and the PC Security Lab testing methodology, Jeffrey Wu, the Managing Director of PC Security Labs said, “Recently a fair number of apps have been pulled from the Android market because they were, in fact, malware; they would dial pay numbers and do other shady things, including stealing contacts and other personal information. Android Malware can be delivered via Google Market, SMS, bundled with normal software or built in pre-installed system. PC Security Labs tested current offerings of mobile internet security apps for Android to measure how well they protect consumer Android smartphones.”
