Mutua General de Catalunya

Ensures a protected hybrid cloud environment

Overview

Mutua General de Catalunya is a nonprofit insurer specialising in healthcare. Founded in Barcelona, Spain in 1984 with an initial base of 6,676 policyholders, it now has 22 subsidiaries covering the entire Catalan territory and serving 75,000 members. With 285 employees, the organisation is financially-sound and strives for excellence. Mutua General de Catalunya also keeps pace with the industry’s technological innovations, and security is a primary consideration.

Challenges

Digital transformation is redefining the insurance industry. To stay competitive, Mutua General de Catalunya wanted to modernise its information management processes to better access data from across the company and reduce the complexity in dayto- day operations. Employees wanted improved systems performance with greater speed, agility, and flexibility. However, the company wants to make optimal use of new technology resources while controlling costs.

“It was time to renew our business systems and move to the cloud, and we started by deploying Microsoft Office 365,” explains Lluís Campos, head of the IT department of Mutua General de Catalunya. “We needed to reactualise the servers and all services because we were changing from a Linux environment to a Microsoft Windows environment.”

While the switch to a hybrid cloud environment and Microsoft® Office 365® simplified system administration, moving data to the cloud introduced new security challenges. In addition, being in the highly-regulated insurance and healthcare industry, they wanted to ensure they had the latest data protection and systems security.

“Security is a critical factor in healthcare and is integrated into any upgrade to our systems,” says Miquel Mauri, systems administrator of Mutua General de Catalunya. “This data is coveted by cyber criminals. We cannot afford an attack of ransomware or any other malware. Added to this are strict regulations, including the new General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, in the European Union.”

Why Trend Micro

After analysing alternative security solutions available on the market, the insurer chose Trend Micro™ Deep Security™ because it was the only solution in the market that secured the Microsoft cloud environment. “Trend Micro allowed us to easily protect our email without affecting overall performance,” says Campos.

As part of the hybrid cloud project, the company wanted to utilise Microsoft OneDrive® and SharePoint® options, which required moving more workloads to the cloud. With security as a priority, the company wanted Trend Micro because it added an additional layer of data protection.

"We want to maintain a secure environment, and we have no doubt that Trend Micro solutions are what we need to keep threats under control."

Solution

Mutua General de Catalunya entrusted Inforein, a partner of Trend Micro, with the deployment of the Trend Micro™ Deep Security™ 10 platform. Deep Security provides comprehensive protection under a single solution specifically designed for the cloud, eliminating vulnerabilities without impacting performance. Additionally, it streamlines audit evidence-gathering and other compliance requirements.

Mutua General de Catalunya has also installed the Trend Micro™ Worry-Free™ Business Security Advanced solution. Easy to install, deploy, and use, it offers advanced protection against malware and ransomware for workstations and mail servers, and manages the mobile devices connected to them. In keeping with the company’s security strategy, it operates with Office 365, which is protected by Trend Micro™ Cloud App Security.

Results

Through Trend Micro, Mutua General de Catalunya has achieved two important objectives. First, it benefits from the advantages of a hybrid cloud environment, increasing productivity, saving costs and time, and adapting to the rapid changes of a dynamic business environment. Second, it gains advanced security, agility, and operational efficiency with Trend Micro solutions that allows it to comply with government regulations.

With Trend Micro™ Deep Security™, the company has cost-effective security protection for both its data centre and cloud workloads against data loss and disruptions to business activity. It has numerous threat defence features—including malware protection, a firewall, intrusion prevention, integrity monitoring, application control, and registry inspection—that are managed from a single control panel. “The improved visibility into our systems helps us prevent security incidents and gives us greater peace of mind,” says Mauri.

In addition, Trend Micro™ Worry-Free™ Advanced adapts to the needs of this midsized company. “With Worry-Free Advanced, we increase productivity while reducing systems administration, knowing a broad range of threats are under control,” said Campos. “This allows us to focus on our business, which is what really matters.”

The expertise of Trend Micro in providing solutions tailored to the needs of each business and designed to take advantage of and complement other platforms was an important factor in the selection by Mutua General de Catalunya. “We want to maintain a secure environment, and we have no doubt that Trend Micro solutions are what we need to keep threats under control,” said Campos.

What's Next

Mutua General de Catalunya plans to increase flexibility for its employees by introducing Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies as part of the transformation process. To ensure this flexibility meets its data protection standards, it is currently testing additional Trend Micro solutions, which can be configured from any device.
