What is my security responsibility in the cloud?

This is one of the most common question our team hears— from someone who is considering moving to the cloud, all the way to a cloud veteran.  Luckily, the answer to this question is very simple. The model for security in any cloud is the same. It is the shared responsibility model.

You share the responsibility for the security of your deployment with your cloud service provider.

AWS is an extremely secure infrastructure that delivers a highly- secure cloud infrastructure and includes a set of comprehensive security controls. Simply put, AWS is responsible for the infrastructure and for managing the security of the cloud. You, as the customer, are responsible for securing everything that is in the cloud.

The benefit of being in the cloud is that you are only responsibly for everything above the hypervisor level. You have full ownership and control of all your data, applications and operating system, but this also means you are responsible for securing them.
