Scammers are now using a new tactic to victimize users: putting a message in the Subject field of the spammed messages. These spammed messages claim to come from FBI agents or from Angela and Dave Dawes, Britain’s third biggest lottery jackpot winners last October. It urges the recipients to disclose personal information such as their names, telephone numbers, and birthdays, among others, in order to get £1.5M. In an attempt to further convince the recipient, it also has a link that points to news online stating that the Dawes couple will share their money.

Typically, spammers employed the message body, attachment of the mail, and the From field to trick users. The tactic of placing the message with a malicious URL in the Subject field is probably done to evade spam filters. As such, users should be more vigilant when it comes to opening messages. Confirm messages from known contacts before opening emails and delete messages from unknown senders.
