This malware is involved in an April 2014 attack that leveraged a macro-enabled word document as a malicious spam attachment in order to infect machines with ZBOT malware. Users affected by this malware may find their online banking accounts compromised.

This Trojan arrives as an attachment to email messages spammed by other malware/grayware or malicious users.

Installation

This Trojan drops and executes the following files:

  • %User Profile%\BrhotakdNdVMM.exe - detected as TSPY_ZBOT.DOCM

(Note: %User Profile% is the current user's profile folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name} on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name} on Windows Vista and 7.)

NOTES:

This document has a malicious macro script that drops and execute an embedded file when the document or workbook is opened.

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Remove the malware/grayware file dropped/downloaded by W97M_SHELLHIDE.A

Step 3

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as W97M_SHELLHIDE.A If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required.
