This spyware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

It executes the dropped file(s). As a result, malicious routines of the dropped files are exhibited on the affected system.

It attempts to steal information, such as user names and passwords, used when logging into certain banking or finance-related websites.

Arrival Details

This spyware arrives on a system as a file dropped by other malware or as a file downloaded unknowingly by users when visiting malicious sites.

Installation

This spyware drops the following non-malicious file:

  • {malware path}\kwpslive.exe - deleted after dropped

It creates the following folders:

  • %User Temp%\{number}.tmp

(Note: %User Temp% is the current user's Temp folder, which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\{user name}\Local Settings\Temp on Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003, or C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Temp on Windows Vista and 7.)

Dropping Routine

This spyware drops the following files:

  • %User Temp%\{number}.tmp\nwe111111.bat - detected as BAT_QHOST.QFB

It executes the dropped file(s). As a result, malicious routines of the dropped files are exhibited on the affected system.

Information Theft

This spyware attempts to steal information from the following banks and/or other financial institutions:

  • Nonghyup Bank
  • Shinhan Bank
  • Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK)
  • KBStar
  • Korean Exchange Bank
  • Standard Chartered Bank
  • Woori Bank
  • Hana Bank

NOTES:

Using the component BAT_QHOST.QFB, it redirects users to {BLOCKED}.{BLOCKED}.236.35 when a user accesses any of the monitored sites. The redirected webpage may display a spoofed login page.

However, as of this writing, the said site is inaccessible.

It deletes the folder %User Temp%\{number}.tmp and the component BAT_QHOST.QFB after execution.

Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Remove malware/grayware files dropped/downloaded by TSPY_QHOST.QFB

Step 3

Search and delete this folder

Step 4

Scan your computer with your Trend Micro product to delete files detected as TSPY_QHOST.QFB.
