Step 1

Before doing any scans, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of their computers.

Step 2

Identifying the Spyware Files

  1. Scan your computer with your Trend Micro Anti-Spyware product.
  2. Note the path and file name of all files detected as HKTL_CAIN.

Trend Micro Anti-Spyware customers need to download the latest anti-spyware pattern file before scanning their computer. Other users can use Housecall, the Trend Micro online threat scanner.

Step 3

Terminate a process file/s detected as HKTL_CAIN

Restart in Safe Mode

Step 6

Restart in normal mode and scan your computer with your Trend Micro product for files detected as HKTL_CAIN. If the detected files have already been cleaned, deleted, or quarantined by your Trend Micro product, no further step is required. You may opt to simply delete the quarantined files. NOTES:
Before proceeding to Step 4, use the Grayware Uninstall Option:

  1. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the displayed list, choose the following program:
     Cain & Abel v4.9.25
  4. Click on Change/Remove.
  5. Follow the instructions on the dialog box that appears.
  6. Close the Add/Remove Programs window, and the Control Panel window
