Malware Overview

This malicious JavaScript may arrive embedded in a file dropped by another malware, manually downloaded and installed by an unsuspecting user, or spammed through email. It may also be hosted by certain Web sites.

It takes advantage of the Windows Media Player Plug-in vulnerability. More information can be found in the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-006 Web page.

It downloads a file detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_DLOADER.DXJ.

Details:

This malicious JavaScript may arrive embedded in a file dropped by another malware, manually downloaded and installed by an unsuspecting user, or spammed through email. It may also be hosted by certain Web sites.

It takes advantage of the Windows Media Player Plug-in vulnerability. More information can be found in the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-006 Web page.

It downloads the file TEST.EXE from the URL, http://{BLOCKED}g.gostns.org/xpl. It then saves the said file as 0.EXE in the root folder (usually C:\). The said downloaded file is detected by Trend Micro as TROJ_DLOADER.DXJ.

This JavaScript runs on Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, and Server 2003.

Important Windows ME/XP Cleaning Instructions

Users running Windows ME and XP must disable System Restore to allow full scanning of infected computers.

Users running other Windows versions can proceed with the succeeding solution set(s).

Running Trend Micro Antivirus

If you are currently running in safe mode, please restart your computer normally before performing the following solution.

Scan your computer with Trend Micro antivirus and delete files detected as JS_DLOADER.EAZ and TROJ_DLOADER.DXJ. To do this, Trend Micro customers must download the latest virus pattern file and scan their computer. Other Internet users can use HouseCall, the Trend Micro online virus scanner.

Applying Patch

This malware exploits a known vulnerability in Windows. Download and install the fix patch supplied by Microsoft. Refrain from using this product until the appropriate patch has been installed. Trend Micro advises users to download critical patches upon release by vendors.
