Encryption

Encryption is the process of converting data into a form that cannot easily be read without knowledge of the conversion mechanism (often called a key). It is used to protect data transmitted over the Internet. Data that encryption protects can be moving (data that is being transmitted over networks) or resting (data that is stored on computers and servers).

The need to protect data is borne out of activities that allow interception of data, usually by unauthorized users or parties.
