Much like any type of regular crime, falling into cybercriminal traps is a serious matter. The tricky part? You may have already been scammed without knowing it. You think you’re just going about your daily online routines or tinkering with your mobile device without realizing you’ve been had.

But just like in real life, prevention is always better than cure. Living a secure digital life calls for a watchful eye. You should be able to easily tell what could completely ruin your online experience. Here are some tips to help you out:

  • Download only from verified sources. Don’t get too excited about downloading files from unverified sources. You may end up with a ransomware-infected computer. Cybercriminals can hold your files or, worse, your computer, hostage in exchange for a huge sum of money.

  • Bookmark your most-visited sites. You can’t be too careful online, especially if your transactions involve money. Bookmarking your most-visited sites lessens risks of landing on malicious and/or compromised ones.

  • Think before you click. Never be too trusting of links that come your way. It doesn’t matter who sent it to you or what form it takes. Always bear in mind that emails and social media posts can be faked. Your contact’s accounts may have been compromised. Or he/she may not be aware that he/she’s sending malicious links or files.

  • Make sure your apps are real. If at all possible, only download apps from official stores. If the app you recently downloaded seeks more permissions than it requires to run, it’s most likely malicious.
