Trend Micro Incorporated Enters into an Agreement to Acquire InterMute
Trend Micro is pleased to announce the acquisition of InterMute leading Internet security and content filtering solutions for enterprises and consumers. Trend Micro has recognized through its own organic development of antispyware capabilities that just as virus and spyware behave differently, the technology and processes developed to combat each needs to be different as well. In addition, as both viruses and spyware evolve, it is likely that we will see mixed threats employing the techniques of each as well. Through the acquisition of InterMute, Trend Micro will be able to augment it’s current antispyware expertise with that of InterMute accelerating our ability to more effectively combat spyware today and future mixed threats tomorrow.

Why did Trend Micro elect to acquire an anti-spyware company?
At Trend Micro, we have approached combating spyware from an antivirus perspective, as that is our area of expertise. While spyware can indeed be considered malicious code, the intent and motivation behind writers of viruses and spyware writers are different. Trend Micro already has a substantial engine, investment, and expertise in antispyware. By this acquisition, Trend Micro will be able to augment it’s current antispyware expertise and accelerating our ability to more effectively combat spyware today and future mixed threats tomorrow.
