What's New in Trend Micro PC-cillin 2003? ============================================ Trend Micro PC-cillin 2003 provides complete personal virus protection and Internet security. This section describes the new and improved features of PC-cillin 2003. New enhanced Personal Firewall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Built from the ground up, PC-cillin’s enhanced Personal Firewall provides solid protection to help prevent intrusion attempts from unauthorized users while you are connected to the Internet. The PC-cillin Personal Firewall is a stateful packet inspection firewall. Unlike packet filter firewalls, stateful packet inspection firewalls not only examine the headers of a packet, but also the contents. New features and enhancements are listed below: Three adjustable Personal Firewall security levels: High, Medium, Low Personal Firewall gives you control of the Personal Firewall security level: High, Medium, Low. You can secure your computer without detailed configuration because each security level is already configured with the default setting for optimal performance. Control access with Exception List rules Beyond the three security levels, PC-cillin 2003 also provides more advanced network access control with Exception List rules. With Exception List rules you can also specify the direction of network traffic allowed or denied access, and the access ports and protocols. Most scanning rules required for common Internet access are set by default so if you are not familiar with detailed operation you can easily use the Exception List without advanced manual configuration. This feature is geared for intermediate or advanced users who want to configure more detailed access setting. Blocking specific packets illegally accessing your computer Various data and information used in illegal access attempts are embedded in the Personal Firewall. Your Personal Firewall constantly monitors all information transmitted between your computer and outside networks and blocks the packet if a specific information matches embedded illegal data. This embedded protection is in effect for all security levels. Blocking Trojan Horses Ports commonly used in Trojan horse attacks are embedded in the Personal Firewall, so illegal Trojan horse access is blocked. This embedded protection is in effect for all security levels. Best configuration for your computer environment We offer flexible and scalable setting options for your working environment: printer and folder sharing on a LAN, and always-on wireless LAN in public. How to add or remove the Personal Firewall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can add or remove the Personal Firewall on PC-cillin 2003. If another firewall is previously installed on your computer, you can choose if PC-cillin's Personal Firewall is active or not (you cannot activate more than one firewall at the same time). About the confirmation message for Intelligent Update ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The new Intelligent Update feature has the option to check for the newest update files and to download them automatically. By turning off the confirmation message that prompts you to update, Intelligent Update checks for and downloads the latest update in the background. Webmail virus scanning ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Previous versions of PC-cillin scan viruses when receiving email messages from the POP server, but now PC-cillin 2003 can scan while you are downloading attached files from your Webmail accounts accessed through an Internet browser. Quarantine Guide ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When PC-cillin detects viruses the default scan action is automatically performed. The Quarantine scan action is performed by default for uncleanable files. The Quarantine Guide helps you decide what action to perform on these files. WebTrap/Site filter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now with PC-cillin 2003, is it no longer necessary to restart after modification of your WebTrap/Site filter setting. In addition, Netscape 7 and AOL 7 browsers are supported. Rescue Disk ~~~~~~~~~~~ You can prepare rescue disks without using the PC-cillin installation CD-ROM. 2. System Requirements ======================= Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98, 98SE, Me, NT Workstation 4.0 with Service Pack 6a, 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2, XP Home or Professional CPU: * Intel Pentium 166MHz or equivalent processor for Windows 98, 98SE, Me, NT 4.0 * Intel Pentium 300MHz or equivalent processor for Windows 2000, XP SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) not supported Memory: 32MB of RAM (64MB or more recommended) for Windows 98, 98SE, Me, NT 4.0 64MB of RAM (128MB or more recommended) for Windows 2000 128MB of RAM for Windows XP For all installations: Internet Explorer 4.01 or above 25MB of available hard disk space for installation RAID not supported Screen resolution 800 x 600 or more, and High Color (65536 colors) or more ----------------------------------------------------- Internet connection required for certain functions ----------------------------------------------------- * You need an Internet connection to register online, download updates, obtain virus information, browse pages on the Trend Micro Web site, or send email messages. * If you use a router to connect to the Internet make sure your router doesn't automatically start a dial-up connection for the Intelligent Update feature because this could be an extra connection fee. In this case you need to modify the router settings or disable Intelligent Update feature. 3. Installing PC-cillin ======================= Installing PC-cillin is simple and only takes a few minutes. During the installation process you are given the choice to install the Personal Firewall. If you do not install the Personal Firewall, other features will also not be installed including Wi-Fi Protection, Internet traffic status, and the ability to instantly halt Internet traffic. How to install PC-cillin 2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To install PC-cillin: 1. Insert the PC-cillin program CD into your CD-ROM drive, and do the following: * If the menu automatically appears, click Install PC-cillin, and then click Next. * If the installation program doesn't automatically start, click Start > Run. In Open, type D\:Setup\setup.exe and click OK (where D:\ is the drive letter of your CD-ROM). Click Next. 2. Click I accept the terms of the license agreement to accept and continue installing PC-cillin. The installation procedure will quit if you do not accept the terms. 3. Click Next, and then continue to follow the onscreen instructions. Please refer to the PC-cillin 2003 Quick Card or manual for detailed installation instructions. If you already installed a previous version of PC-cillin ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You must remove it before installing PC-cillin 2003. The Setup program can detect the prior version and perform the uninstallation process. After the removing the prior version, you must restart your computer before installing PC-cillin 2003. 4. Known Issues ======================= Automatic insertion of your License Key ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The License Key you received at the time of your online registration is automatically added to the PC-cillin 2003 Main window. However, if your browser's security level is "High" or Active scripting is "disabled" the License Key isn't automatically added and you need to add it manually. Please copy the License Key from the Registration Web page or from the email and please add it correctly to the Registration screen. Then click the Finish button. Note: the License Key is case sensitive. Updating once after installing PC-cillin 2003 without registering ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After you type your serial number and install PC-cillin 2003, within a few moments, a window appears prompting you to update. After installing PC-cillin 2003 but before registering online, you are permitted to update only once. Once you close this window, you must register online to update. Schedule during manual task scanning ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Your scheduled scan task not executed if a Manual Scan was performed on that designated date. Also, if the schedule of your scan task has a conflict, only the first scan task is executed and others are disabled. How to enable or disable your scan task schedule ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You can enable or disable scan tasks by selecting or clearing the scan task check box on the left side of the list in the Scan Task screen. If you clear the check box, the task won't be performed on the specified date. All drive scanning ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Standard mode [All drive scan] and some scan tasks can scan all local drives. However, mapped network drives are not included in the scan. A scan task that includes [All drive scan] and [all files] can scan removable disks such as floppy disks, and CD-ROM drives. If no medium is inserted, it is automatically skipped and goes on to scan the next drive. Manual scanning and progress bar status during scan tasks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The progress bar calculates the total number of files divided by the number of scanned files. In the beginning of a Manual Scan or during a scan task, the progress bar appears to be around 100% because the number of files initially scanned is almost identical to the number of files counted. Later the files will be counted much quicker than scanned and the progress bar will reflect more accurately the scan progress. How to clean compressed files ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ZIP clean (compressed file cleaning) function can only handle only infected files in the first layer (files compressed once). If files are compressed more than once (ex. ZIP files compressed again with ZIP format), infected files compressed and divided in more than two layers cannot be automatically cleaned. Infected files in the Excel XLSTART folder ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you have selected the "Change extension" scan action, the extensions of infected files are modified. Once the extension of common files has been changed, you cannot open them. However, files in the Microsoft Excel "XLSTART" folder and its backup folder are automatically read during start up and any infected files in these folders are quarantined instead of having their file extension modified. Automatic configuration for your email software ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PC-cillin 2003 can configure your email software to scan viruses on email messages automatically. The supported email software includes the following: Microsoft Outlook Express 4.0, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 Microsoft Outlook 98, 2000, 2002 Netscape Messenger 4.5 4.6 4.7 Netscape 6.0, 6.1, 7.0 Eudora Pro 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 5.0 If you use the email software other than what is listed above, you need to change the setting of your email software manually to scan all your received email messages and attachments. (However, it is not covered by Trend Micro technical support). Please refer to the PC-cillin 2003 Help for manual configuration. About Email Scan ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * If you need to set the specific proxy type with your application software, PC-cillin 2003 Email Scan may not be performed. * Some receiving mail servers need to log on for authentication (environments using AUTH command). In this case, Email Scan is not used (please disable Email Scan). * If your mail receiving server uses a port other than port 110, then POP3 mail scan doesn't function. * Email Scan does not support IMAP or APOP. * If your email software's setting leaves a copy of your mail on the mail server, after installing PC-cillin 2003, the messages previously downloaded from the server will download again. This occurs because the server name of your mail client is modified by Email Scan. PC-cillin 2003 logo's splash screen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In previous versions, the PC-cillin logo was displayed while scanning email, running WebTrap, or Site Filter. This splash screen has been discontinued for PC-cillin 2003. Displaying the virus property of your files ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PC-cillin 2003 can scan viruses by right clicking the file and selecting [PC-cillin] from the menu. However, on some versions of Windows the image files types .AWD .DCX .PCX .TIFF .TIF .WIF .XIF are are associated with a program. We recommend you don't scan these file types by right clicking them because system performance could become unstable. To scan these files we recommend you perform a Manual Scan. Backup files ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you set making backup files during the virus cleaning process, they are transferred to the quarantine folder. Backup files can be deleted or restored using the Quarantine Folder actions. Please refer to PC-cillin 2003 online help for detailed instructions on handling files in the Quarantine Folder. Default setting for WebTrap, Site Filter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By default, WebTrap and Site Filter are disabled. You need to manually activate WebTrap and Site Filter on the Setting window. Site Filter: adding a [Restricted site] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If Site Filter is enabled, URLs on Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator are automatically displayed on the [Restricted site]. Depending on the structure of the Web site, the URL displayed on the [Restricted site] text box may be different from the one displayed on the Web browser address bar. Font size on your screen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you select the font size [large] from your computer's Screen property, some PC-cillin 2003's layout will be distorted. We suggest using the font size [small]. PC-cillin 2003 Online help ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 or above needs to be installed for using PC-cillin 2003 Online help. Windows XP ~~~~~~~~~~ Windows XP's Guest account is not supported. Upgrading Windows OS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please remove PC-cillin 2003 before upgrading Windows. 30-day trial version ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A 30-day trial version of PC-cillin 2003 can be installed without typing the serial number. You can use this version for one month. The following functions will be disabled: * User registration * Updating virus pattern and program files After 30 days this trial version will expire, please purchase the product if you would like to continue to use it. You can upgrade PC-cillin 2003 to the full version without removing by typing the serial number with the product. Please visit the Trend Micro Web site for your purchase. We introduce the retailers on the Internet. Password protecting your Site Filter screen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you select the Password protection check box on the Site Filter screen, remember to click the Set Password button and actually set a password. If you don't, the next time you try to view the Site filter you will be prompted for a password, although one wasn't set. If this happens you need to reinstall PC-cillin to view the Site Filter screen. 5. About the Personal Firewall ============================== How to add or remove the Personal Firewall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To add or remove Personal Firewall you must first close all running programs. Some systems could experience a temporary slow down while starting PC-cillin 2003, Internet Explorer, or other applications immediately following the modification of your Personal Firewall settings. Also, if you install the Personal Firewall while transferring files, the file transfer process could be interrupted. How to enable or disable your Personal Firewall ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you want to enable or disable your Personal Firewall, you must first close all running programs. Some systems could experience a temporary slow down while starting PC-cillin 2003, Internet Explorer, or other applications immediately following the modification of your Personal Firewall settings. Priority on the Exception Rule list ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Exception List rules provides rule priority based on location in the list, the higher on the list, the higher priority. For example, if you set up a rule to allow traffic on port 100, and then add another rule to deny port 100 traffic; if your permission rule is higher on the list, it is the higher priority traffic using port 100 is allowed. If you still need to enable the rejection rule, you must disable the permission rule or delete it. Illegal characters for the Exception List rule "Explanation" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ You cannot use the character "|" in the Exception List rule "Explanation" field. About security level and Exception List rules displayed items ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you set the security level to "Medium", you will see the all Exception List rules configured as "permitted" or "rejected". If your security level is "High", only "permitted" rules will be displayed ("rejected" rules are not shown). If your security level is "Low" the Exception List rule setting is disabled (no list is displayed). Specifying Incoming and Outgoing ports for Exception List rules ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ When creating your own Exception List rules, remember for incoming rules the specified port number is describing a port number on your own computer. For outgoing rules the port number is describing a port number on an outside computer. Trusted Site setting from the prior version ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PC-cillin 2002's Personal Firewall gave you the function to set up a Trusted Site. Now PC-cillin 2003's Personal Firewall can offer more detailed configuration than the prior "Trusted Site". If you would like to set up the same configuration as the "Trusted Site" from PC-cillin 2002 you need to add two protocol rules: ICMP and TCP/UDP from the configuration window of the [Exception List rule] from the [Personal Firewall]. [First rule] Permission for Internet access Designation the permitted computers Direction of the ports: receiving and transmitting Protocol: ICMP [Second rule] Permission for Internet access Designation the permitted computers Direction of the ports: receiving and transmitting Protocol: TCP/UDP You can set the same configuration as "Trusted Site" by adding the above two rules. 6. Pattern files and Scan engine ================================ You may download pattern files and scan engine updates while your support period is valid.
